Drinking Wine like Drinking Shots

Has anyone of you know any one that drinks wine as if they were drinking vodka shots? Well, neither have I, until this past weekend. After a pretty cool Chinese New Year celebration at Ping's in Chinatown, we all decided to just hang out at my place. We started playing poker, and what started out as just drinking some beer, some wine, or some Smirnoff Ice, turned into cheers followed by people downing red wine (then later white wine) as shots. I think people decided on red wine, instead of vodka, because, well, red wine has less alcohol content. Hey, as long as people are having fun, and I just to happen have wines such as the 2000 Robert Mondavi Coastal Private Selection Merlot Central Coast lying around, that I would have otherwise made Sangria out of. Oh hey, have a look see of a picture of what happened:

Several bottle was opened that night, but the only one worth mentioning is the Montes Alpha Syrah Colchagua Valley Apalta Vineyard 2003 (link), first opened when people were still conscious and were drinking wine like it was wine and not drinking wine like it was a vodka shot. This wine is rated in the top 100 by Wine Spectator in 2005 (as #62). I thought this syrah is a more laid back style syrah rather than your typical Australian Syrah, and the wine relies on more finesse to please and tantalize the palate rather than depending on sheer power. Medium body and structured, with forward flavors of ripe black fruits and very smooth. The wine was very good, and only cost $16. I would buy this again to enjoy over a gathering, but haha, definately not as shots. =)

good thing you had cheaper wine around the house, otherwise it would be all wasted!
